THE PAPER MILL
Leiria paper mill was one of the first in the Iberian Peninsula and was one of the city’s founding industrial institutions.
Its history began in 1411, at a time when the milling industry played a decisive role in the city’s economic development.
Dedicated particularly to grinding cereals (corn, wheat and rye), the mill also produced olive oil and paper, the latter of which had close connections to the first printing press being established in Leiria and the very start of the Jewish influence on the area.
Located on the River Lis’s secluded banks, the mill was remodelled following designs by architect Siza Vieira in 2009. Of particular note are the old wheels within the building itself, as well as the vast outdoor water wheels that serve to exalt the image of a traditional industry from years gone by.
Inside, a skilled miller shows visitors the traditional process used to produce paper and grind cereal, getting them involved in the ancient traditions.
Once the tour is over, visitors can buy the flour ground using the energy produced by the river’s waters.
