THE CASTLE
To this day, Leiria castle remains a monumental symbol of the city’s history.
The imposing inner walls bear traces of the castle’s various phases of occupation, from when it was a military fortress to becoming a royal palace.
Since the very start of human occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, when tools were still made of stone, humanity has been enchanted by the landscapes of this land, nestled between the sea and the mountains!
Several kings and queens found themselves dazzled by the fantastic landscapes unfurling beneath their feet as they looked out from the top of the hill.
The monarch who spent the longest time in Leiria was King Denis, along with his wife, Queen Elizabeth, one of the receivers of the Miracle of the Roses – one of several stories told in Leiria about these monarchs.
Several centuries later, the castle and the city would come to suffer widespread damage due to the French invasions, which almost led to it being abandoned.
The work put in by the League of Friends of the Castle and famous Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi to restore the castle paid off, however, successfully rebuilding the connection between the magnificent monument and the population.
In 2021, the requalification works of great part of the space were concluded, which allowed not only to value even more its patrimonial richness and to increase its touristic potentai, but also to make it more inclusive and open to all citizesn, through the construction of two mechanical accesses (ont eh north and south sides), which are free of charge.
In 2022, Leiria Castle was distinguished with the Five Stars Regions Awards, in the National Monuments category.
