A Fair Dating Back to the Time of Kings
The history of the Leiria Fair dates back to the time of King Afonso Henriques, who officially established the fair in a royal charter issued in 1142. However, Leiria only received its annual fair charter in 1295, during the reign of King Dinis. Centuries later, in 1928, the inauguration of the railway increased the Leiria Fair’s attractiveness, size, and importance.
The Praça Rodrigues Lobo, Largo 5 de Outubro, and Rua de Santana in the Bairro dos Anjos were some of the locations that once hosted fairs and markets, serving as meeting points for the population. Before settling in the grounds adjacent to the Municipal Stadium of Leiria, the fair was also held in the Tenente Coronel Jaime Tomas da Fonseca Park (better known as Avião Park).
