May is the month to celebrate Leiria and its people. This year, the Leiria Fair returns to fill the city of Lis with excitement, featuring concerts by renowned artists, carousels and attractions for all ages, and street food for the sweetest tooths.
Light, music, and joy are guaranteed at this event, which has already become one of the most anticipated in Leiria.
The Leiria Fair, a success story whose history dates back to the time of kings, has managed to reinvent itself year after year by adding new elements to its offerings, with a growing focus on new points of attraction, notably the concerts, some of which are of international scale.

A Fair Dating Back to the Time of Kings
The history of the Leiria Fair dates back to the time of King Afonso Henriques, who officially established the fair in a royal charter issued in 1142. However, Leiria only received its annual fair charter in 1295, during the reign of King Dinis. Centuries later, in 1928, the inauguration of the railway increased the Leiria Fair’s attractiveness, size, and importance.
The Praça Rodrigues Lobo, Largo 5 de Outubro, and Rua de Santana in the Bairro dos Anjos were some of the locations that once hosted fairs and markets, serving as meeting points for the population. Before settling in the grounds adjacent to the Municipal Stadium of Leiria, the fair was also held in the Tenente Coronel Jaime Tomas da Fonseca Park (better known as Avião Park).
