Xávega is a centuries-old artisanal fishing technique that has lived on at Pedrógão Beach, thanks to the local fishermen’s knowledge and love of the sea.
After being launched into the sea by typical colourful half-moon-shaped boats with a tapered, raised bow, the Nets are pulled to the beach using the mechanical strength of tractors and the human strength of the fishermen.
Nowadays, Arte xávega is far more than a livelihood for the Pedrógão Beach fishermen, it is a tourist attraction that has curious holidaymakers gathering around the nets, eager to see the flashes of silver of the flailing fresh fish, even reaching out to lay their hands to the ropes as if it was their duty to do so.
Come and witness this tradition that takes place whenever the sea allows, and be seduced by this beach’s unique traditions.
