Despite the varying stories told about how the Franciscan community came to Leiria, it is thought that Saint Francis’ Church and Convent were built in the 13th century, having undergone several changes and extensions over time.
The complex contains several pieces of art, the most notable of which are the Gothic mural paintings covering the nave, which are considered unique in Portugal due to their high quality and sheer size.
