THE THEATRE
It was back in 1963 that José Lúcio da Silva came on the scene, expressing his desire to build a theatre for the city.
Work then began on a property in an old vineyard belonging to the Marques da Cruz family, going on to become an unmistakable mark of modernism in Portugal.
The first stone was laid on the 29th July 1964.
About 18 months later, the work was completed, and the theatre opened on the night of Saturday the 15th January 1966, an inauguration attended by Admiral Américo Thomaz.
Several renovations have been carried out over the years, such as a digital sound system being implemented, new chairs and a new carpet added, the stage being remodelled and most recently, a new projector being acquired, allowing for better image cropping and making this one of the best theatres in the country.
The José Lúcio da Silva Theatre is a “monumental” theatre that seats 763 people, presenting excellent backdrops that provide visual comfort now rarely found in projection rooms – the reason behind this particular theatre’s importance as part of the city’s culture.
