The House of Painters is located next to the old Largo dos Banhos (Bath Square) and corresponds to the joining of two buildings, the result of a process that took place over at least five centuries.

Its architecture is of medieval origin and features two upper floors, situated at the top of a small block that was part of the medieval Jewish quarter.

It is one of the rare buildings that bear witness to the oldest residential architecture in the Historic Center of Leiria, and it may have served as a shop, grocery store, barbershop, and tavern on the ground floor.

The House of Painters is so named because of the large number of artists who painted its facade, which features a balcony with a wooden balustrade.

As an urban house representative of the city’s historical memory, it currently houses, along with the Church of Mercy, the Leiria Intercultural Dialogue Center.
