To this day, Leiria’s Castle remains a monumental landmark of the city’s history.
Inside its imposing walls, it keeps evidence of different stages of its occupancy, from military fortress to royal palace.
Ever since humans first reached the Iberian Peninsula, when tools were made of stone, man has been marvelled by this breath-taking landscape between mountain and sea.
From the Castle, you can enjoy an excellent view of the city that delighted the kings and queens who visited the castle: Alfonso I of Portugal, Denis and Saint Elizabeth of Portugal (whom legend claims to have performed the miracle of the roses), John III of Portugal, among many others.
