THE MARKET
The Sant’Ana Market building was constructed on the site of the former Santa Ana convent, which was dissolved in 1880.
Designed in 1921 by the architect Ernesto Korrodi to house the municipal market, reconstruction work began in 1924 and ended in 1931. For 50 years, it was one of the main meeting places in the center of Leiria.
During the second half of the 20th century, the building slowly began to accommodate other types of occupation and activities due to the decentralization of the municipal market.
In 2002, it underwent renovation works that provided the building with infrastructure for the development of cultural activities.
Currently, the Sant’Ana Market has an exhibition space, two auditoriums, open-air galleries for events, and commercial spaces in the arcades open to the exterior, establishing itself as an intergenerational space that fosters sharing and social interaction.
Among the main events and fairs that take place at the Sant’Ana Market, the Prove Leiria Doçaria (Try Leiria Pastry) and the Book Fair stand out.
