This exhibition seeks to address the evolution of the urban area that is the city of Leiria, in a journey dating back thousands of years.
Based on employing a historical perspective, this exhibition focuses on the various options and consequent transformations of urban design, with a focus on understanding the city as it stands today.
Relying on the knowledge provided by geology, geography and archaeology, this journey begins when humans first arrived in the region, after which the first permanent settlements followed. Tracing forwards through time, the role this city played, and its twists and turns have naturally varied greatly, all the way up to the present day.
Using the drawings, landscapes, letters and maps artists, travellers, soldiers and, later, architects and urban planners have produced over time, of what is now Leiria, this exhibit tries to determine and interpret the choices made and the constraints and the challenges faced by urbanists and political leaders, and how they were overcome.
The exhibition consists of free-standing structures containing information panels, complemented by multimedia presentations providing information that allows for a closer look and assessment of the documentation provided.
In order to meet current regulations, the physical version of this exhibition will be held outdoors, but it will also be made available online, on a website designed for the purpose.
The City of Leiria – Size and Design exhibition will be open until the 31st December 2021.
